Dove Fresh Start
Catering
A fresh start, a longing each of us
can identify with at some point in our lives. A fresh start is what
we’re hoping for the participants in the new catering project here
at Dove.
Dove staff members work in all programs, to teach practical skills,
helping persons move toward increased self-sufficiency. This project
employs individuals receiving services from our programs that are
under-employed or not presently employed. This part time job will
allow them to gain marketable skills and to spend up to six months
training for more permanent employment.
The vehicle is catering, where participants can establish or
re-establish a positive job record. Weeding out bad habits and
replacing with new job skills will help participants obtain new
positions in the future.
In February 2008, in addition to feeding the residents of the
domestic violence shelter, the Dove Fresh Start Catering began
serving 3 meals a day, 7 days a week to residents at Heritage
Behavioral Health Center. With this commitment by HBHC, the program
has an excellent foundation.
Darnella Snipes, current Dove Shelter Cook, had the necessary skills
to become the Head Cook for this venture. Patty Plato, Shelter
Coordinator, will assist in the administration of the program. Rondy
Nixon was hired, to lend his unique talents to the project. The participants are
referred from Sue Hemp, Job Developer at the Homeward Bound Program.
Sue will also be able to assist participants with that next step of
permanent employment while preparing other clients to be ready to
step into the vacated jobs.

What is Homeward Bound?
Homeward Bound provides transitional housing, case
management and supportive services to homeless persons living
in the Decatur/Macon County area. It was established in 1995 from
the work of the newly formed Homeless Council Continuum of Care.
Now, more than 10 years later, the Homeward Bound program continues
to meet its original concept, has added components, and is diligently
working to meet the needs of homeless individuals and families.
Homeward Bound is a collaboration of its partnership
agencies and is funded through grants from the US Department of
Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and the Illinois Department
of Human Services.
