Beware of Scams:
That friendly voice on the other end of the phone or door, that e-mail or letter you received telling you about a windfall of money, could be a scammer. It could be someone who offers to help you with your income tax, Circuit Breaker, or Illinois Care Rx paperwork, or someone who wants to help you in your day-to-day activities for free or a small fee. They will try to get you to tell them your Social Security Number and or your Bank Account information. Do not give them that information!

There are agencies that are certified to handle such paperwork. Always ask the person if they are certified by AIRS (Alliance of Information and Referral Systems). East Central Illinois Area Agency on Aging, ECIAAA, has put together a network of agencies that are here to serve the needs of older adults. If you have any questions about someone who has asked if they could assist you with anything, call ECIAAA at 1.800.888.4456. They will be glad to give you correct information and who in your area can assist you.

Senior Transportation is now available for all individuals over the age of 60 and able to use the service without an escort. Need a ride to a medical appointment, the grocery store or to a nutrition site? They will pick you up at your door. Call Andrea at DMCOC at 428.4148 for more information on this first-come, first-served transportation service as well as schedule information.

Identity theft

don't let it happen
to you!

Identity theft against the elderly is a growing problem.  The following is from the Faith In Action program, Reach Out Morongo Basin in California.

$                   Treat your mail and trash carefully.  Put outgoing mail in a post office collection box.  Request a vacation hold when you will be away by calling your local post office.

$                   Tear or shred your charge/debit receipts, copies of credit applications, insurance forms, physician statements, expired credit/debit cards you are discarding and credit offers you receive in the mail.

$                   Do not carry your Social Security Card.  Leave it in a secure place.

$                   Give your social security number only when absolutely necessary.  Ask to use other types of identifiers.

$                   Carry only the identification information and credit/debit cards that you will actually need while you are out.

$                   Be cautious when responding to promotions.  Identity thieves may create phony promotional offers to obtain your personal information.  If you receive a call from someone claiming to be from your bank needing to verify some information, ask for their name and tell them you will call them back.  Do not call the number they give you.  Look the phone number up in the phone book.  If your bank did not call you, call the police and let them know someone was trying to get your personal information.

$                   Pick up new checks directly from the bank instead of having them mailed to you.

$                   Call the police and report if you think you are a victim of identify theft.
