Activities
Our environmentally concerned RSVP members are involved with several
recycling projects.
1) Operating an aluminum can recycling center located
at 130 West Cerro Gordo Street which is open Monday through Saturday
from 9:00 am. to noon. Members of the community are invited to
bring in their aluminum cans and are paid the current market price.
Recycling cans may also provide an fund-raising activity for your
organization - call the RSVP office for more information.
2) Volunteers collect #1 plastic bottles from various
locations and deliver them to Decatur Recycle Company where they
are eventually shipped to market.
3) In cooperation with Macon County Solid Waste Management,
volunteers collect recyclable paper at various schools. Through
our efforts these environmentally viable projects not only keep
our landfills uncluttered they are also made into exciting, everyday
products.
The funds raised are used to support many other activities.
The Recycling Center is the biggest fund-raising project within the RSVP program.
Clothing Room
RSVP volunteers operate a children’s clothing room located at
the Prairie Avenue Christian Church, 2201 E. Prairie, Decatur.
The community is invited to donate good used children’s clothing
that is given to others free-of-charge. Community members are
invited to shop at the Clothing room on Monday through Thursday,
1:00 to 4:00p.m. There is also a red drop off box outside on the
south side of the church. There is no income guidelines or referrals
necessary to visit the Clothing Room. Appointments are also available
by calling the office, 217.428.6616.
Children’s Train
RSVP volunteers enjoy operating the children’s train at the Hickory
Point Mall. This is an opportunity for an intergenerational experience
since many volunteers do not have the privilege of having their
own grandchildren close by. This is a gratifying and delightful
fund-raising project for RSVP.
RSVP in DeWitt County
In 2002 the RSVP program began operating a satellite office in
DeWitt County with the office located in Clinton. The county has
