The American Cancer Society
through its Road to Recovery program is looking for volunteers
to assist with transportation. Lack of transportation
leaves cancer patients with few options for completing their
treatment schedules. Many patients need daily or weekly
treatments over a period of months and simply have no way to
get there. Although family and friends may be able to
help, there are many times when they’re not available.
Road to Recovery provides transportation options for patients
in this situation. Currently there is a cancer patient
in Farmer City that needs assistance with transportation to
the Community Cancer Center in Normal. You can help save
a life by volunteering your time as a driver.

Do You Know 2
of Decatur’s Best Kept Secrets?
More than 3,500 Decatur adults read below the 9th grade level.
Project READ volunteers are helping motivated adults achieve
their goals by improving their reading skills.
We can make an impact on our community!
Project READ, in partnership with Dove, Inc., received a
one-year grant from the City of Decatur. We hired four new staff
members to train volunteer tutors, the backbone of our
operation. Volunteers work one-on-one with adults who want to
get better jobs, go back to school, help their children, and
contribute to our community. Students are waiting for tutors,
and now we can meet their needs! Our goal is to train 25-30
reading tutors each month.
How can we help you?
Illiteracy affects our entire community. Reading problems are easily
camouflaged by intelligent adults. An employee, co-worker, neighbor,
client, or family member may be hiding the fact that he or she
struggles with reading. Our program is the pathway for people to
receive the help they need. Their success is Decatur’s success!
How can you help us?
●Refer adults who will benefit from our
program.
●Volunteer to be a tutor one hour a week.
●Invite us to speak to your group.
●Support literacy with a financial
donation to Project READ.
