BABES Volunteer

BABES, Beginning Awareness Basic Education Studies, is a program sponsored by Dove, Inc., which bring worthwhile life skill lessons to children in grades K-3rd, in Macon and DeWitt county schools.
This volunteer commitment is usually an hour a week for six weeks and that covers two classrooms. The presentations are made in pairs. Bring a friend who can be your partner or be teamed with a person during the training.   Babes presentations will begin again in the fall.

DeWitt County RSVP Community Involvement Opportunities

Reading Buddies is a program to assist students in maintaining their reading and/or math level over the summer. Volunteers meet 1 to 2 times a week for 1 to 11/2 hours with a student at the library. This year RSVP is able to offer this program to the students of Blue Ridge School District and the students of Clinton School District. Information and permission slips will be going home with the students soon. Volunteer training will be in the later part of May. Being able to read is important in our society. Do you have some time over the summer to make sure the students know how to read?

Peace Meal has been serving lunch to seniors in Clinton since 1974.  Volunteers are vital to the success of the program. These volunteers assist in making sure the needs of homebound seniors are met.  In some cases, the Peace Meal volunteer is the only person a homebound senior sees in the course of a day. Volunteers are needed in two areas,

Delivery of meals to DeWitt and Nixon high rises. There are 7 or less meals to deliver.

Weldon Springs is gearing up for visitors. Volunteers are needed for a variety of activities. No experience is necessary, training is provided.

Schoolhouse Host/ess Saturdays or Sundays, 9:00 a.m. to noon or 1:00 to 4:00 p.m., Memorial Day through Labor Day.

Volunteer Naturalist a NEW program, work with Carol Thompson Saturdays or Sundays, 9:00 a.m. to noon or 1:00 to 4:00 p.m., Memorial Day through Labor Day.

Garden Helpers no green thumb required. Meet twice a month during the spring, summer and fall for gardening. Days and hours are flexible.

Weldon Springs welcomes all those interested to call, 935.2644 leave your name and phone number and you will be called back.

Countryside and Webster Apartments will again be having a summer lunch / activity program beginning in June. Each day, Monday through Friday, a volunteer is needed to from 11:45 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. to assist with serving the meals. Volunteers who enjoy doing crafts and/or playing games are welcome a few days a week from 12:45 pm to 1:30 pm. Come and be an extra set of hands while the children enjoy the craft and/or game. Choose your day(s) of the week and spend some quality time with some of the children of the community.

Farmer City Library is in need of volunteers on Fridays, 9:30 to10:30 a.m.   Volunteers will be the Aextra@ hands at the summer reading program for birth through 1st graders.  Come and share your helping hands during the activity portion of the storytelling & activity program.

 BABES is looking for volunteers for the upcoming school year.  This puppet program deals with self-esteem, peer pressure, coping skills and good decision making.  Two volunteers present a fully scripted, half hour program to first and /or third graders.  Join our puppet friends, Buttons & Bows McKitty, Myth Mary, Donovan Dignity, Recovering Reggie, Early Bird and Rhonda Rabbit as they share their lives with the students.  Training is required.   

 OSF St. Joseph Medical Center, Clinton office is looking for volunteers to assist with general office assistance.  Set you own schedule, anytime during office hours on Monday thru Friday.  Who knows this may be your contribution to helping keep medical costs down.

Peace Meal in Clinton is looking for volunteers to be substitute deliverers.  There are times when the regular volunteer cannot make the lunch deliveries.  The seniors still need their meals.  Deliveries are between 10:30 a.m. noon and take about 30 minutes.  Could you spare some time once or twice a month to help make sure a senior gets a well balanced hot meal?

 Big Brothers Big Sisters is looking for volunteers to be a BIG to a little.  BIGS are volunteers who Y mentor littles, do activities, are role models.  BIGS make a difference.  Volunteer time is set by you, the volunteer, so it fits your schedule.  Training is provided.

 Faith in Action is looking for volunteers to input data to create reports.  Hours are flexible.

 Encore Thrift Store is looking for volunteers to assist with sorting and straightening up.  Donations come in and need to be sorted.  On busy days, during store hours, the clothing area gets messy.  Volunteers are needed to straighten up the room.

 Blessed Lighthouse Thrift Store is looking for volunteers to assist with sorting donations on Thursday afternoons for 1 hour.  Volunteers are also needed as cashiers in the store.

Macon County RSVP Community Involvement Opportunities

McKinley Court Gift Shop -  Share a smile with the residents and greet customers. Volunteers needed on Friday mornings, 10:00 a.m. to12:30 p.m. Call Susan at 428.6616.

Meals On Wheels - Every day of the week RSVP volunteers deliver Route 18 going to residents of Spring Creek, which takes about half hour. Choose a day once a month and give us a call to help us provide a good nutritious meal to a homebound senior. Call Susan at 428.6616.

Community Recycling Center - Share your friendly smile and enjoyment interacting with the public by helping us as a cashier. 8:30 a.m. to noon. A warm and congenial atmosphere and a good cup of coffee provided. Choose a day that is convenient for you and call Joan at 428.6616.

Old King's Orchard Community Center - Enjoy the children while checking attendance, assisting with games, and serving lunch during the Summer program. The Center is a year round safe haven for the children and all neighborhood residents. If you have ideas for new and innovative activities and programs, we'd love to learn about them too. Call Joyce at 428.2782.

Big Brothers-Big Sisters - Seeking mentors to work with youth in both the community and school settings. The staff will carefully match you with a child most fitting your experience and interests and provide orientation and training. Ongoing support by the staff ensures that both children and volunteers benefit in the best possible way. Dates and times for visits are flexible with your schedule. Wherever you live or work, the opportunity to make an impact is nearby. Call 428.4240.

Rock Springs Center - Be a part of history as a Prairie Heritage Volunteer, give tours of a 1860's historic farm house, help with special projects which include carpentry, gardening, painting, sewing, presenting a program, or portraying a 91th century person in period clothing.  Call Erin or Melody at 423.7708 or visit www.maconcountyconservation.org.   

Faith In Action - Do you have 1-2 hours to spare? You could help someone with transportation, grocery shopping, friendly visiting, yard maintenance, exercise, respite care, letter writing, reading, telephone reassurance. Call Christina at 428.0013.

Northeast Community Fund - RSVP is helping with the food distribution project every Friday of each month. No lifting required, just a smile and a cheerful greeting. Call Susan at 428.6616 if you can help one Friday a month from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m.  Parking available in rear of building.  

Catholic Charities - Catholic Charities Food Pantry is seeking volunteer help, Mondays and Tuesdays,  1:00 to 3:00 p.m., filling food bags, takes about  2 hours; and Tuesdays and Wednesdays 9:00 to 11:00 a.m., distributing food bags.  Call 428.3458.
